Detailing Lumonyx
Backlighting onyx or alabaster requires a bit of planning. At Lumonyx we work with designers, lighting consultants and owners to help you achieve the look you want.
The type of backlighting that is best for your project will depend on the effect desired.
Keep in mind that backlit Lumonyx stone becomes a three-dimensional illuminated shape, with the normal shadow and illumination source and effect reversed. The results are bold, dramatic and amazing.
Depending on the level of assistance needed, we can work with you three ways:
- Supply the Lumonyx alabaster or onyx material only
- Supply Lumonyx material and attachment details or structures
- Supply, fabricate and install of the entire work
In order to get the details right we believe it is important to work closely with customers. We can assist with test samples, renderings and mock ups to help demonstrate the design. The step by step approval process helps ensure that our clients, and yours, are satisfied with the final result.
Backlighting Options
Lighting technology is constantly changing and new systems offer new options and design considerations.
Dimmable Florescent
The Lumonyx bars can be back lighted with dimmable fluorescent strips. The lights should be spaced to produce an even glow and can be controlled with brightness settings for daytime or night.
LEDs
Lumonyx panels can be backlit with LED strips. These can be controlled on a dimming system.
Low-Voltage Strips
Bars and shelves may be backlit with low-voltage strips. They work well for highlighting and strip lighting.
Lumonyx Joints
The large sizes available in Lumonyx (4' by 8') allows for fewer joints than traditional onyx or alabaster panels. Joints in between stone panels may be accentuated or minimized. For accentuated joints a solid filler is used. For some designs, "false joints" may be routed into the panels and then grouted to create the effect of multiple pieces of stone. Mosaic patterns and designs are able to be created this way. For hidden or minimized joints, Lumonyx Joint Adhesive is used.
Lumonyx Adhesive
Lumonyx Joint Adhesive has been specially developed to work with the backlit Lumonyx panels. The adhesive is translucent and offers a close match to the Lumonyx stone sheet when backlit. Lighting type, angle, intensity, etc. may affect the visibility of joints.
Non Backlit Applications
When applying Lumonyx stone panels over a solid opaque substrate color variations in the substrate may “read” through the translucent panels. For best results the substrate or wall should be a uniform color (usually white) and a clear adhesive should be used.
Always place a panel against the wall to check for shadows. Apply adhesive to a sample and check for adhesive shadow.
Ventilation of Backlit Stone
An important consideration in the overall design of any backlit bartop, wall, etc is the amount of heat generated from the light source. If Lumonyx® sheet is heated from one side, thermal expansion may cause minor bowing. Trapped heat may also damage your lights. In an enclosed lighting application, the design needs to include proper ventilation to ensure that the enclosure does not overheat.
Note: The Lumonyx backlit stone panels are intended for use with natural light or electrical light sources. The panels are not intended to be used in applications lit with or near flames.
Supports for Illuminated Stone by Lumonyx
Supports for Lumonyx backlit stone vary. The possibilities of shadows needs to be considered and we can help you with that. Since Lumonyx is lighter, thinner and stronger than traditional onyx it is much easier to support. Many of the supports used with glass or acrylic also work with Lumonyx. These include standoffs, cable systems, rod systems and frames.
Supports for Illuminated Bars and Tables in Lumonyx
Lumonyx HC is a composite material of our onyx or alabaster on our translucent honeycomb. Lumonyx HC offers excellent rigidity and strength for backlit bar tops and tables without creating shadows.
Supports and Hardware for Backlit Walls and Ceilings
For backlit alabaster or onyx walls, ceilings, dividers or feature panels in Lumonyx, many types of glass hardware also works with Lumonyx. You may select your own or order from us. To make selecting and ordering easier, we offer a range of stand offs, door hardware, cable and rod systems, railings, etc.
